Jaidee wins three-way playoff in Korea

04/26/2009 - Jeju Island, South Korea (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Thongchai Jaidee holed a short birdie putt to win a three-way playoff Sunday at the Ballantine's Championship, his second victory in less than two months.

Jaidee knocked his approach to five feet on the first extra hole -- the par- four 18th -- and made the putt to knock off Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Sung-Hoon Kang for his fourth European Tour win.

The 39-year-old from Thailand picked up title No. 3 at last month's Indonesian Open.

"I enjoyed winning a tournament for the second time this year," he said.

The trio finished regulation at four-under 284 following a tough weekend for scoring at Pinx Golf Club. Kang shot a four-under 68, Fernandez-Castano had a 69 and Jaidee was the last to make the playoff after posting a 70.

On the extra hole, all three players found the fairway off the 18th tee.

Jaidee applied the pressure with an eight-iron to five feet, while Kang followed by hitting his approach to about seven feet. Fernandez-Castano sent his shot bouncing off the back of the green, all but knocking him out of the playoff.

After Fernandez-Castano was unable to hole his chip-shot, Kang also missed on his seven-foot birdie try. Jaidee then calmly drained his five-footer for the win.

"If you putt well, you win the tournament," said Jaidee.

The loss was particularly sour for Fernandez-Castano, who has now finished as a runner-up in three consecutive tournaments.

"I have to say, this one hurt," said the 28-year-old Spaniard, still seeking win No. 5. "But that's golf."

Ernie Els shot a 71 and finished two strokes out of the playoff. He tied for fourth place at two-under 286 with Seve Benson (69), Rafael Cabrera-Bello (70) and third-round leader Robert-Jan Derksen (76).

Peter Lawrie (66), Mardan Mamat (71) and Danny Willett (69) were the only other players to break par for the tournament, finishing at one-under 287.

Kang held a one-shot lead when he reached the 18th tee, but he bogeyed the closing hole to drop to minus-four. Later, he squandered a chance for his first European Tour win by missing a birdie putt on the same hole.

Fernandez-Castano bogeyed No. 17 to fall into a tie with Kang, then parred the 18th with a chance to take sole possession of the lead.

Jaidee was the last of the three players to finish his final round. After making a birdie at No. 10, he parred eight consecutive holes to coast into the playoff.

"I didn't think [I] could win the tournament. When I looked at the leaderboard I thought, 'I have no shot,'" said Jaidee.

But he did win. And the victory made a weekend's worth of chilly, windy conditions on Jeju Island well worth the hassle.

"I never won in weather like this before," said Jaidee.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.

Bet on NFL Football

Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.

Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.

Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.

Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.

All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.

A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
